Get Started

Start a tax business — with or without an EFIN

You need a PTIN, the right software, a plan for bank products, and someone checking your work before it reaches the IRS. Here is how tax preparers launch a real firm with The Tax Wealth Lab — whether you are filing your first return or your five-hundredth.

The vision is big. The road can feel heavy.

Where most new tax preparers get stuck

Maybe you're just getting started — staring at a PTIN or EFIN application, software decisions, and a hundred questions nobody seems to answer straight. Or maybe you're already in it: preparing returns, answering client questions, learning new tax laws, chasing documents, fixing software issues, and trying to market your business all at once.

No matter what brought you here, you want greater security for your family and more opportunities for the clients who trust you with their financial future. You got into this work because you saw what was possible — a business of your own, control over your time, income that could change your family's future, becoming the person your community trusts.

The Tax Wealth Lab exists to put real structure under that vision — so you move beyond simply preparing returns and become the owner of a firm that is organized, supported, compliant, profitable, and built to last.

What you actually need to open for business

1. A PTIN

Every paid preparer needs a Preparer Tax Identification Number from the IRS. It is the one credential you cannot skip, and you can get it in an afternoon. PTIN vs. EFIN — what each one is for.

2. An EFIN (or a plan for one)

Your EFIN is what lets your business transmit returns electronically. The application is free but the IRS suitability check takes time. Lab partners get walked through the application during onboarding, with auditor supervision on their returns while the IRS processes it. You keep your own ERO status — we never rent you ours. Step-by-step: how to get an EFIN.

3. Professional tax software with bank products

Consumer software will not cut it. You need a professional platform that handles individual and business returns, bank products (refund transfers) so clients can pay from their refund, and technical support during the season. See what software and support is included.

4. Someone reviewing your returns

This is the piece most bureaus leave out. Every return prepared inside The Tax Wealth Lab crosses a former Big 4 auditor's desk before it transmits — 24–36 hour turnaround, all season long. It is how new preparers start clean and how established offices stay compliant.

5. Training, systems, and a community that does not disappear in May

Weekly live trainings on tax law, pricing, operations, and marketing. Office hours with the review desk. A 21-step roadmap covering everything from your business entity and WISP to hiring your first team member.
